Guugu Yimithirr and Binthi Warra Timeline of Key Dates and Events

Our Bama (people) have lived on Binthi Country for thousands of years, since millennia, caring and sharing the resources. Our history shows a long commitment to our our Country and culture. Binthi Warra has always maintained strong connections, and our Elders past and present paved the way for us to follow through their respect for Country and tireless commitment. Our families continue to work together to build a strong future, and BLHGAC is our forum to achieve this.

Timeline

1986
1986

Under the Community Services (Aborigines) Act 1984, a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT ) was given to the Hope Vale Community Council as Trustees by the then Premier Hon. Johannes Bjelke-Petersen. The granted title of 110,000 ha of land which was previously Aboriginal Reserve Land held by the Under Secretary as trustee, to the Community Council to act as trustees of the land for the benefit of the residents.

1991
1991

The Aboriginal Land Act 1991 (Qld) (the Act) was passed along with the Torres Strait Islander Land Act 1991 (Qld) in order to provide mechanisms for land to be granted to groups of Indigenous people in Queensland and the DOGIT had to be transferred to new trustees.

1993
1993 – 1994

Dr Gertrude Stotz undertakes fieldwork with Binthi Warra Elders to record Binthi Country boundary and sites for the Cape York Land Council.

1993

Cape Flattery to Cape Bedford Sand Dune Belt registered with the Register of the National Estate [ID: 15071] for its natural values.

1994

The former Indigenous Land Corporation now current Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation purchased Mt Baird Station for the Binthi Warra to Binthi Aboriginal Corporation (deregistered).

1997
1997

Guugu Yimithirr people received acknowledgement of their native title rights.

1999
1999

Binthi Land Holding Group Aboriginal Corporation incorporated.

2004
2004

Hope Vale Community Council became a Local Government Authority.

2011
2011

110,000 ha of Aboriginal Freehold land owned by the 13 clans transferred to Hope Vale Congress Aboriginal Corporation in accordance with the 1997 Native Title Determination.

2016
2016

Starcke East and Starcke West blocks handed back to the Binthi Warra to Binthi Land Holding Group Aboriginal Corporation.
